TOWODE Wired Magnetic Door or Window Contact Reed Switch

Description

The TOWODE wired magnetic door and window contact is a simple, reliable reed switch sensor that detects open/closed states using magnetic proximity. These normally-closed switches require no power source and work entirely through passive mechanical switching when the magnet moves away from the sensor. Designed for DIY home security and automation projects, they connect to alarm panels, microcontrollers, or smart home hubs via two-wire terminals, providing a completely local and maintenance-free detection solution.

Device

Overview

My Implementation

I wired twelve TOWODE reed switches to a Konnected alarm panel, converting my existing home security system into a Home Assistant-integrated solution. Each sensor connects with two-wire runs from door/window frames to the centralized panel in my utility closet. The normally-closed configuration means open doors trigger immediate binary sensor updates in Home Assistant, enabling security automations, entry notifications, and climate control optimizations based on window states.

Device Score Summary

CategoryScoreRationale
Features★★★☆☆Simple on/off detection only. No battery, wireless, or advanced sensing, but perfectly suited for door/window monitoring
Interoperability★★★★★Universal contact closure works with any system accepting wired inputs. Konnected and ESPHome provide excellent HA integration
Setup Ease★★☆☆☆Requires wire running and basic electrical skills. Installation complexity depends on home construction and accessibility
Cloud Dependency★★★★★Completely local operation with zero cloud communication. Reliability depends only on controller, not external services
Vendor Trust★★☆☆☆Generic import brand with minimal documentation. Simple design means little can go wrong, but no warranty support
Overall★★★★☆Rock-solid reliability for wired installations. Best choice for permanent security and automation where wireless isn’t viable

★★★★★ Exceptional | ★★★★☆ Very Good | ★★★☆☆ Good Enough | ★★☆☆☆ Frustrating | ★☆☆☆☆ Avoid

Home Assistant Integration

Integration Method: Konnected Alarm Panel

  • Requirements: Konnected board or compatible alarm panel, two-wire runs from each sensor location to central panel, Home Assistant with Konnected integration
  • Entities: Binary sensor entities reporting on/off states for each connected zone
  • Setup: Wire sensors to Konnected zones using normally-closed configuration, configure zone assignments in Konnected interface, auto-discovers in Home Assistant
  • Notes: ESPHome is an alternative for smaller deployments using ESP8266/ESP32 boards with GPIO inputs. Wired reliability far exceeds wireless sensors for critical security applications.

Practical Considerations

  • Wiring Required: Must run two-wire cable from each sensor location to controller. Plan wire routing before drywall installation for cleanest results
  • Magnet Alignment: Sensor and magnet must align within 10-15mm gap when closed. Test fit before permanent mounting to verify trigger distance
  • Normally-Closed Advantage: Wired as NC, any wire break or tampering triggers an alert, providing security benefits over NO configuration
  • Metal Doors: Steel door frames can interfere with magnetic field. Use extended-gap models or adjust mounting position for reliable operation
  • Outdoor Use: Basic models are indoor-rated only. For exterior doors, use weatherproof enclosures or purchase outdoor-rated switches
  • Wire Gauge: 22-18 AWG wire recommended for typical runs under 100 feet. Longer distances may require heavier gauge to prevent voltage drop issues
  • Testing: Always test sensor operation before closing up walls. Verify both open and closed states trigger correct responses in Home Assistant
