Targus USB-C Universal DV4K Docking Station

Description

The Targus USB-C Universal DV4K Docking Station (DOCK190USZ) is a versatile connectivity hub that connects laptops to dual 4K displays, peripherals, and network via a single USB-C cable. It provides 100W power delivery for laptop charging and features DisplayLink technology for universal compatibility across Windows, macOS, and Linux. While not a smart home device itself, it enables reliable workstation setups that integrate with Home Assistant for presence detection and workspace automation.

Device

Overview

My Implementation

I use the Targus DOCK190USZ at my desk to connect dual 4K monitors, keyboard, mouse, and Ethernet to my laptop via a single USB-C connection. Home Assistant monitors the dock's network connection to detect when I'm actively working at my desk, triggering automations that adjust desk lighting to optimal brightness, set room temperature to my preferred working comfort level, and activate do-not-disturb modes on smart displays. When the dock disconnects at end of workday, the system transitions to evening lighting and resumes normal notification settings.

Home Assistant Integration

Integration Method: Network Device Tracker (Ping)

  • Requirements: Dock connected to network via Ethernet, Home Assistant on same network. Optional: SNMP or router integration for enhanced tracking
  • Entities: Device tracker entity shows home/away status, binary sensor for connection state. Can monitor USB devices connected through dock via system sensors
  • Setup: Configuration → Integrations → Add → Ping, enter dock’s IP address. For laptop tracking: monitor laptop’s WiFi or USB network adapter when docked
  • Notes: Dock itself doesn’t have smart features, but provides reliable presence detection for workspace automation. Ethernet connection enables low-latency monitoring

Practical Considerations

  • DisplayLink Drivers: Requires DisplayLink driver installation on host computer for video output. Drivers available for all major operating systems
  • Power Delivery: 100W PD supports most laptops including MacBook Pro 16″, but verify your specific laptop’s power requirements
  • 4K Limitations: Dual 4K displays run at 30Hz, not 60Hz. For 4K@60Hz on one display, only use single monitor output
  • USB-C Compatibility: Works with USB-C ports that support DisplayPort Alt Mode. Older USB-C ports may only charge without video
  • Network Detection: Static IP or DHCP reservation recommended for consistent Home Assistant monitoring of dock presence
  • Heat Generation: DisplayLink processing generates moderate heat. Ensure adequate ventilation around dock for longevity
  • Cable Quality: Use high-quality USB-C cable rated for 100W PD and video for reliable connection. Cheap cables cause connection drops
