Overview

My Implementation

Deployed the SmartCode 916 CNT on my front door, paired with Home Assistant via Z-Wave JS. I use the Keymaster integration to manage user codes dynamically, automatically generating temporary codes for guests and service personnel. Automations include door unlock notifications, auto-lock after 5 minutes, and alerts when specific users arrive home.

Home Assistant Integration

Integration Method: Z-Wave JS

  • Requirements: Z-Wave USB stick (Aeotec Z-Stick 7 or similar), Z-Wave JS integration installed in Home Assistant
  • Entities: Lock (lock/unlock), battery sensor, alarm sensor, user code management (via Keymaster integration)
  • Setup: Configuration → Integrations → Add → Z-Wave JS, then include the lock by pressing the program button and entering master code
  • Notes: Highly recommended to pair with Keymaster integration for advanced code management, including scheduling and notifications per user code

Practical Considerations

  • Door Thickness Compatibility: Designed for standard 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch thick doors. Verify your door thickness before purchase as thicker doors may require extensions
  • Z-Wave Range: Lock must be within Z-Wave mesh range. Place a powered Z-Wave repeater nearby if experiencing connectivity issues
  • Battery Life: Cold weather significantly reduces battery life. Monitor battery levels during winter months and keep spare batteries on hand
  • Installation Complexity: Requires standard deadbolt bore hole. Installation typically takes 30-45 minutes with basic tools
  • Code Management: Without Keymaster integration, managing user codes requires manual programming. Keymaster automates this process with dynamic code creation/deletion
  • Physical Key Override: SmartKey technology allows re-keying without removing the lock, providing flexibility if you move or need to change keys
