LED Deck Lights Kit Outdoor Recessed

Description

FVT LED deck lights are low-voltage recessed lighting fixtures designed for outdoor installation in decks, patios, stairs, and landscaping. These WiFi-enabled RGB lights connect directly to smart home systems without requiring a separate hub, offering weather-resistant construction rated for permanent outdoor exposure. The kit includes multiple light fixtures, a central WiFi controller, and low-voltage wiring for safe DIY installation.

Device

Overview

My Implementation

I installed 20 FVT deck lights around my deck perimeter and stair risers using the RGB WiFi kit with a 12V 60W power supply. The controller is flashed with ESPHome firmware for local control and integrated into Home Assistant scenes that sync with sunset/sunrise times. Automations gradually dim the lights as the evening progresses, shift to red lighting after 10 PM to preserve night vision, and automatically turn off at midnight. Motion sensors on the deck trigger the lights to full brightness when someone approaches the door.

Device Score Summary

CategoryScoreRationale
Features★★★★☆Excellent outdoor-rated RGB lighting with good brightness, waterproof construction, lacks individual light addressability
Interoperability★★★★☆Works with Flux LED integration out of box, ESPHome firmware enables superior local control and faster response
Setup Ease★★★☆☆Physical installation is DIY-friendly low-voltage work, but requires basic electrical knowledge and ESPHome flashing for best integration
Cloud Dependency★★★☆☆Stock firmware requires cloud for initial setup and app control, ESPHome eliminates cloud entirely for fully local operation
Vendor Trust★★★☆☆FVT is small manufacturer with basic support, product quality is acceptable but not premium, limited warranty coverage
Overall★★★★☆Solid value for outdoor smart lighting, ESPHome firmware dramatically improves reliability and local control for automation

★★★★★ Exceptional | ★★★★☆ Very Good | ★★★☆☆ Good Enough | ★★☆☆☆ Frustrating | ★☆☆☆☆ Avoid

Home Assistant Integration

Integration Method: ESPHome (Recommended) or Flux LED

  • Requirements: 12V DC power supply sized for total light wattage (typically 60-100W for 10-20 lights), WiFi coverage extending to controller installation location, ESPHome add-on for custom firmware approach
  • Entities: Light entity with RGB color control, brightness adjustment, and smooth transitions. ESPHome adds WiFi signal sensor, restart button, and optional power monitoring if external sensor added.
  • Setup: For Flux LED, configure lights via FVT mobile app then add Flux LED integration in HA which auto-discovers devices. For ESPHome, flash controller with custom firmware via serial connection, configure YAML with GPIO pins matching controller hardware, device auto-discovers in HA after flashing.
  • Notes: FVT controllers use ESP8266 chipset compatible with ESPHome, flashing eliminates cloud dependency and significantly improves response time for outdoor lighting automations synchronized with security events

Practical Considerations

  • Power Supply Location: Install power supply in weather-protected location like garage or weatherproof enclosure, avoid exposure to rain and snow which reduces lifespan
  • Wire Gauge Selection: Use appropriate wire gauge for distance from power supply to lights, voltage drop over long runs causes dimming and color shifting, 18AWG recommended for runs under 30 feet
  • Drill Hole Sizing: Standard 1-inch spade bit creates proper mounting hole in wood deck boards, use pilot hole first to prevent splitting composite decking materials
  • WiFi Range Challenges: Outdoor installations often have weak WiFi signal, controller must be within reliable coverage area or use weatherproof WiFi extender for distant deck locations
  • Waterproofing Connections: Even with IP67 rated lights, protect wire splices and controller connections with silicone sealant or waterproof junction boxes to prevent corrosion
  • Heat Dissipation: Recessed lights generate minimal heat but ensure adequate air circulation, avoid installing in completely sealed cavities without ventilation
  • Color Temperature at Night: Bright white and blue colors appear harsh at night, warm white or amber tones provide better ambiance for evening deck use
