Overview

My Implementation

I have the Samsung TU7000 65" mounted in the living room, integrated with Home Assistant via the Samsung Smart TV integration and supplemented with a BroadLink IR blaster for reliable power control. The TV connects via WiFi for smart features, with a Roku streaming stick and Fire TV Stick as primary content sources. Automations dim lights when content starts playing, adjust lighting color temperature based on time of day, and pause playback when doorbell rings. The TV displays Home Assistant dashboards via browser when not actively streaming content.

Home Assistant Integration

Integration Method: Samsung Smart TV (Native)

  • Requirements: TV and Home Assistant on same network, TV must be powered on for initial pairing. Optional: BroadLink IR blaster for reliable power control
  • Entities: Media player entity with power, source, volume, mute controls. Sensors for current app and viewing state available when TV is on
  • Setup: Configuration → Integrations → Add → Samsung Smart TV → TV automatically discovered on network. Accept pairing request on TV screen
  • Notes: Wake-on-LAN unreliable for power-on in many Samsung TVs. IR or HDMI-CEC recommended for power control. Integration provides app detection for automation triggers

Practical Considerations

  • Power Control Issues: Samsung TVs often ignore network wake commands. BroadLink IR blaster or smart plug provides reliable power automation
  • Network Stability: WiFi connection may drop or lag. Wired Ethernet recommended for consistent Home Assistant control and status updates
  • Smart TV Privacy: Tizen platform collects viewing data. Disable ACR (Automatic Content Recognition) in settings and review privacy options
  • Streaming Device Integration: Roku, Fire TV, or Chromecast devices integrate better with Home Assistant than built-in TV apps for content control
  • HDMI-CEC Configuration: Enable Anynet+ in TV settings for CEC control of connected devices through Home Assistant
  • Picture Settings: Disable motion smoothing (Auto Motion Plus) and adjust Game Mode settings for optimal picture quality per input source
  • IR Blaster Placement: Position BroadLink device with clear line of sight to TV’s IR receiver, typically bottom center of bezel
